Prime Minister Victor Ponta anounced on Wednesday his resignation after massive street protests in Bucharest, on November 3rd. “I notice the legitimate anger in society,” said Victor Ponta, referring to the wave of emotion and popular uprising after fires at the club Colectiv, which have killed more than 30 people.

The announcement came originally from PSD President Liviu Dragnea, who said that “politics can not stay separated from society anymore.” According to Mediafax, Liviu Dragnea said that the premier’s decision was taken due to the fact that the coalition partners have not understood that we must take political responsibility for the tragic events. He suggested that Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea (leader of UNPR) and mayor of Sector 4 Cristian Popescu Piedone refused to step back.

On the evening of October 3, 25,000 demonstrators in Bucharest demanded the resignation of those three political and administrative leaders. They were held responsible for the corruption and malfunction in the prevention and control system against fires, which led to the tragedy of 30 November.

Victor Ponta is the head of the Romanian government since 7 May 2012, with the support of a political coalition that includes Social Democratic Party (PSD), National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE).
