We continue the extensive presentation of the Energy Evolution 2015 nominations with the Lifetime Achievement category. Only one of the experts below will be awarded during the Gala on December 3. However, each of the companies and all the people involved in these projects deserve our respect and the widest promotion possible.
Electrocentrale Bucureşti
Emilian Mateescu, adviser to the General Manager
Emilian Mateescu has an experience of over 40 years in the energy industry. He has thorough knowledge of the district heating system in Romania, being considered an expert in the field, and has often faced the challenges of this industry, which is why the ELCEN team nominates him as candidate for the Excellence Award for Lifetime Achievement.
A graduate of the Faculty of Power Engineering (Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest), Emilian Mateescu is a professional dedicated to his work, who has contributed to numerous investment projects with impact on the development strategy of the company, programs of construction consolidation and rehabilitation at ELCEN, as well as action programs for environmental protection.
Emilian Mateescu started his career in 1972, as trainee engineer, at CET București Vest, following academic distribution. In 1985 he went to the Ministry of Power, where he took the position of principal engineer. A year later he became principal specialist inspector. In 1988 he started working at the National Power Dispatcher, as principal engineer. In 1990, he returned to CET București Vest, as head of the Electrical Department, position held for five years. In 1995 he was promoted as technical deputy director of Electrocentrale Bucharest Subsidiary, where two years later he was appointed general manager. From 2009 and until 2015 he held the position of technical director and, respectively, technical deputy general manager at ELCEN. Currently, he is adviser to the General Manager of ELCEN.
Nuclearelectrica
Ionel Bucur, director Cernavodă NPP
In over 36 years of experience in the nuclear industry and in as many years fully dedicated to Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, Ionel Bucur, PhD, Director of Cernavodă NPP, is the man and professional under whose management and expertise in operation the Cernavodă NPP site from the ’70s became today the greatest industrial performance in Romania, Cernavodă NPP being the first in the world in terms of capacity factor from the commissioning of the two units.
Ionel Bucur participated in and coordinated the construction, commissioning and operation of the Nuclear Power Plant in Cernavodă, being as from 1998, following the entry into commercial operation of Unit 1 of Cernavodă NPP, the first Power Plant Director, and as from 2004 Manager of Cernavodă NPP Branch.
In this capacity, Ionel Bucur coordinates all the activities related to the production of electrical and thermal energy, in compliance and with the improvement and innovation of all processes related to maintaining and constantly improving the functions of nuclear security of the power plant. The management of the power plant, in its complexity: production, operation, performances, involves the complex coordination and interdependence of over 1,600 specialists. With a high level of expertise in the nuclear industry, gained through a constant activity in the development of the Romanian nuclear program, but also through external specializations, Ionel Bucur, PhD, is currently one of the best specialists in the nuclear industry, a trainer of new specialists and an evaluator of nuclear power plants at international level.
UPG Ploiești
The Oil and Gas University of Ploieşti was established in 1948, under the name of Oil and Gas Institute. In 1992, the Institute became the University of Ploiești due to the emergence of economic and human sciences faculties. A year later, the name was changed to the current one.
Prof. Dr. Eng. Niculae Antonescu
Niculae Antonescu is a personality known in the Romanian energy sector, a professional in petroleum and petrochemical equipment, oil, gas and environmental engineering, with a prodigious professional pedagogical and scientific activity, which lasted for over 50 years.
His prestigious work was carried out based on more than 150 contracts with beneficiaries in all sectors of activity, and based on research, development and innovation programs, carried out at national and international level with famous institutions
He is member of the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania, Academy of Mining Sciences of Ukraine and was offered the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from four universities. For his entire activity, he has been awarded more than 50 medals and honorary titles, both at home and abroad, including the Order of the Star of Romania, with Knight Rank (1999). He was a member of the Romanian Parliament between 1996 and 2004, and rector of the Oil and Gas University of Ploiesti.
A testimony of his rich activity, we can mention the writing of 22 books, over 280 articles and scientific papers and contributions to 13 patents.
Transelectrica
Transelectrica manages and operates the national power transmission system and ensures electricity exchanges between the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It is responsible for electricity transmission, functioning of the system and market, as well as for the safety of the system.
Octavian Lohan, member of the Directorate
Octavian Lohan has an experience of over 35 years in the National Power System (NPS), holding during his career several management positions with Transelectrica, to that of Deputy General Manager. He coordinated the program of tests and technical regulations for Transelectrica’s admission, in 2003, as a full member in UCTE.
He was also responsible for interconnecting the South-East European power system with the West European power system, a process completed in 2004. Since then, NPS is interconnected with the West European system through 400kV lines Arad – Sandorfalva and Roșiori – Mukacevo.
Between 1996 and 1999, Octavian Lohan was in charge with the analysis of operational regimes and scheduling NPS operation, as head of department in the Dispatching Center. For almost 20 years, he was responsible for the operational control of the power transmission network and then for the entire system. He is a member of national professional organizations and author of over 35 works on functioning of the system and of the electricity market.
UPB
The Polytechnic University of Bucharest (UPB) is the largest and oldest technical university in the country and among the most prestigious universities in Romania. Founded in 1894 as School of Roads, Bridges, Mines and Architecture, UPB goes through a permanent modernization process.
Prof. Dr. Eng. Florin-Teodor Tănăsescu
Florin-Teodor Tănăsescu led for more than 30 years the Research and Electrotechnical Engineering Institute and had an important contribution to the work of scientific societies in Romania.
In 1986 he was elected President of the National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission. He is a founding member of RNC-WEC (Romanian National Committee of World Energy Council) and of the Telework and Teleactivities Romanian Society and member of CIGRE.
At the same time, he is secretary general of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences and honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova. Between 2006 and 2009 he was member of the Executive Board of the General Association of Romanian Engineers. He is president of the “Association for Terminology” (TERMROM).
During his activity, Florin-Teodor Tănăsescu received various awards and honors, including the Traian Vuia award of the Romanian Academy, in 1970. He was also honored with a diploma from the National Authority for Scientific Research.
