ArcelorMittal Galați started the operations for installing a major overhead crane which will serve for transporting the liquid steel to the casting machines, the company announced.

„This project, amounting EUR 6.5 Millions is embedded in a multi-annual EUR 60 Millions investment plan for modernizing the Galati Steel Melting Shop, with the aim of increasing the productivity and quality”, said Bruno Ribo, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Galati and Skopje.

For putting in position a caterpillar crane with a 600 tons lifting capacity was used, the biggest of its kind in Romania, and the roof of the Steel Shop was dismantled in order to install the new equipment.

The new crane, weighting 416 tons, can lift – in full safety – 300 tons of liquid steel in covered ladles. The project also covers the complete repair of the bay girders and beams, the replacement of the contact line and railway, a new electrical room and industrial construction works.

The new equipment will be capable to tilt the ladles in the same operation step, with a positive impact in productivity.
