If last week the energy price reached about 100 euros per MWh, during Wednesday, January 18th, it registered a peak of almost 111 Euros (500 lei) per MWh, according to information from the market operator, Opcom, on the day-ahead market (PZU).

Meanwhile, Ovidiu Agliceru, general manager of Hidroelectrica, says that in January energy was sold even with 177 Euros (800 lei) per MWh, on the balancing market.

“Following the requests from Transelectrica, we went every day on the balancing market. We sold electricity at prices between 250 and 800 lei per MWh,” says Agliceru quoted by economica.net. He estimated that since the beginning of the month, one characterized by record electricity consumption amid the low temperatures, Hidroelectrica sold about 150 GWh in order to balance the energy system.

“I can tell you for sure that the cold did not bring loss for Hidroelectrica,” said Agliceru, while asked about what would be the profit recorded by the company through the sale of electricity to balance the system.

For comparison, the average price on the balancing market was about 320 lei MWh in January 2016, according to ANRE.
