The coal production of Romania in the first five months of the year totaled 1,864 million tons of oil equivalent, higher by 12,9% (213.000 tep) than in the similar period of 2016, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
In the mentioned period, Romania imported 154.600 tep coal, with 46.000 tep (22,9%) less compared to the quantity imported in the same period last year.
According to the Energy Strategy project, published on the ministry’s website, Romania has total reserves of 12,6 billion tons of lignite, geographically concentrated in the Oltenia Mining Basin. The exploited deposits total 986 million tons, according to Agerpres.
The pit coal reserves, concentrated in the carboniferous basin of the Jiu Valley, amount to 2,2 billion tons, out of which 592 million tons are in the exploited perimeters.
