The European Commission asks the European Parliament and the Council to look at how energy taxation could contribute more effectively to achieving the EU’s energy and climate policy objectives.

The EU executive also wants European lawmakers to consider how a move to qualified majority voting (QMV) between Member States could help “unblock progress in this area”, according to Euractiv.ro.

Tax decisions in the EU are only taken unanimously, but the Commission has since January called for a step-by-step approach to qualified majority decision-making in all areas of taxation.

The Commission considers in its fourth report on the state of the energy union adopted on Tuesday that it has “fully” fulfilled its commitments on an energy union strategy through which “affordable, safe, competitive and sustainable energy is guaranteed for all Europeans “.

“Europe is already a world leader in the fight against climate change. European policies implemented over the last five years in all policy areas have placed the EU on the right track to take full advantage of the transition to clean energy, capitalizing on the economic opportunities it offers, generating growth, jobs and creating a healthier environment for consumers,” the EU executive said in a statement.
