Electricity production as a source of natural gas increased significantly in the second quarter (Q2) of the year in Europe, fueled by the low gas price and the high costs of coal generation.

Electricity generation in gas plants increased by 39% in the European Union in the second quarter of 2019, compared to the same period last year, shows the quarterly report published by DG Energy, citing the association of transport and system operators in Europe , ENTSO-E, according to e-nergia.ro.

In absolute terms, the gas plants produced an additional 34.2 TWh of electricity, the equivalent of more than half of Romania’s annual consumption. Unlike in previous years, in 2019, the production of electricity on gas has not decreased after the winter, and the main reason for the increase is the decrease of the electricity generation from coal, by 16%, in the same reporting period, the coal being replaced especially with gas in the Union energy mix, shows DG Energy.
