The registration of Roşia Montană in UNESCO’s heritage sites lists does not aim to save it, but to block the largest gold and silver resource in Europe, a resource that the Romanian state must use in the interest of its citizens, says the National Trade Union Confederation Meridian.
In a statement, the confederation draws the attention of the Prime Minister Ludovic Orban, members of the Government and public authorities with attributions in the sphere of national security that the pressures exerted on the Executive for the inclusion of Roşia Montană in UNESCO seriously undermine Romania’s strategic interests and affect the national security, according to Agerpres.
“The mining project from Roşia Montană could also save the mining community that the so-called ‘rescuers’ condemned to poverty and depopulation, the community members being forced to leave their homes to look for work outside the borders of the country, instead of working at home, in the region of the Apuseni Mountains. Due to the non-implementation of the mining project, the investor sued Romania at ICSID, requesting damages of 4 billion dollars, money that we will all pay, out of own pockets, in case Romania will lose the process,” the statement adds.
According to the quoted source, the registration of Roşia Montană in UNESCO would have jeopardized the fate of the arbitration and, therefore, during the UNESCO session held on July 2, 2018 in Manama, Bahrain, the Romanian Government requested to postpone the registration of Roşia Montană file in UNESCO until the dispute with the investor has been resolved, and this has been approved by the World Heritage Committee.
