The multiannual financial framework and the economic recovery fund must provide the necessary resources to continue the efforts of the European Union (EU) to follow the path necessary to achieve the EU 2050 climate neutrality target, said Mircea Fechet, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests (MMAP), at the informal meeting of environment ministers in the Member States, held online from 13th to 14th of July.

”In terms of environmental protection, the National Plan for Investment and Economic Recovery, which was launched by the Romanian Government in early July this year, provides for continued funding or new green investments to reduce emissions, such as renewing the national car park and running programs for electromobility, modernization of large energy production complexes and district heating networks, programs to increase energy efficiency by rehabilitating public and private buildings. At the same time, starting with spring of this year, inside the largest national forrest planting campaign of the last decade, more than 2,500 forests are being planted nationwide from scratch and another 7,000 young forests have been completed. We believe that in addition to national efforts, the multiannual financial framework and the economic recovery fund must provide the necessary resources to continue the EU’s efforts to achieve the EU 2050 goal of climate neutrality,” Fechet said, according to Agerpres.

He added that after the pandemic period that all states have faced and are facing, it is clear that the model of economic and social development needs to change.

“The development of digitalization has a crucial role to play in optimizing processes, innovation and anticipating and finding effective solutions to the challenges of health, environment, climate change, agriculture (food security), resource efficiency, energy, intelligent transport systems. The pandemic and its aftermath have highlighted the importance of digitalisation in all sectors of the EU economy. Therefore, promotion, investment in digital transformation and the necessary tools have become essential. Europe needs to seize the potential of digital transformation, which is key to achieving the goals of the European Green Deal,” said the MMAP Secretary of State.
