The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the EU’s future strategy on offshore renewable energy, which will be adopted later this year, according to a statement from the EU executive, according to Agerpres.

The strategy will support the development and integration of offshore sources into the European Union’s energy mix to support the 2030 and 2050 climate goals.

It will present a new approach to exploiting Europe’s energy potential from offshore renewables in a sustainable and inclusive manner and will help overcome existing barriers.

”This is an essential part of the European Green Deal and the EU’s Next Generation EU recovery package, as it will help create jobs and stimulate investment as we implement new clean technologies across the EU. Strengthening domestic energy production will help provide affordable energy to our citizens and boost the resilience and security of Europe’s supply.”

“To achieve climate neutrality by 2050, we need to increase the EU’s offshore energy production by twenty times. This means facilitating the construction of large-scale offshore wind farms in an environmentally sustainable way. We must also use the potential of other renewable sources, such as offshore solar energy, as well as new opportunities in tidal and ocean energy,” Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson was quoted as saying.

The public consultation will run until September 24.
