Audi and E.ON built a solar park on the roofs of two logistics centers at the headquarters of the German carmaker in Győr – Hungary, on an area of about 160,000 square meters. The largest rooftop photovoltaic system in Europe, with a maximum power of 12 megawatts, located in the headquarters of the Audi Hungary factory, was officially put into operation on Wednesday.

“This project is in many ways what it takes to meet our carbon neutral target by 2050. To do this, we need to rebuild urban and industrial energy systems and direct them towards CO2-neutral systems. I believe that the project carried out together with our partner Audi is an important step in our endeavor to create the world of sustainable energy of tomorrow and I hope that it will be followed by other projects of this kind,” said Karsten Wildberger, member of the board to E.ON.

“Our goal is clear: by 2025, all Audi locations should be CO2-neutral,” says Peter Kössler, a member of Audi Production’s Board of Directors. “By transforming our factories into renewable energy producers, we are making an important contribution to climate protection.”

In a joint project with E.ON Hungary, Audi made available the roof area of the two logistics centers, each with a size of approximately 80,000 square meters, for the construction of the solar energy park. E.ON has installed the 35,000 solar modules that have now become operational. The solar park will provide over 9.5 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy annually. This is enough to cover the electricity needs of about 5,000 households each year and will reduce CO2 emissions by about 6,000 tonnes.
