The EU strategy for energy system integration dominated the first hours of the COGEN Europe Annual Conference, during its first day. As Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director General, European Commission put it, „energy systems integration is a huge opportunity for cogeneration”.
At turn, MEP Cristian Bușoi said that Strategy on Energy Systems Integration would be an important part of green economic recovery. Energy system integration refers to the planning and operating of the energy system “as a whole”, across multiple energy carriers, infrastructures, and consumption sectors. It creates stronger links between them with the objective of delivering low-carbon, reliable and resource-efficient energy services, at the least possible cost for society. Energy system integration is the pathway towards an effective, affordable and deep decarbonization of the European economy.
In her Keynote introduction for the CEO Session 1, dedicated to Tomorrow’s Energy, Laura Cozzi, Chief Energy Modeller & Head of Division World Energy Outlook, International Energy Agency, estimated that 1 trillion USD of investments in energy efficiency and renewable would create 9 million jobs for the next 3 years. At the same time, the CEOs in the panel discussion highlighted that all electric was not feasible. “We need efficient use of green molecules to complement electrification on our road to climate neutrality 2050”, they agreed, in one of the main take-aways of the first day of the COGEN Europe Virtual Annual Conference.
