The price of carbon certificates tends to recover, following the alarming increases of the first weeks of January. Thus, the EUA price dropped today below the value of 32 euro/ tonne of CO2, registering a value of 31.55 euro.

The EUA certificate recorded historic highs in the first and second weeks of the year, following the upward trend in energy prices, as well as the decline in the supply of certificates.

The EUA contract from December 2021 ended in the first week at 34.91 euro tCO2, the highest value since 2005, the year of the establishment of the EU ETS market, as energynomics.ro previously reported here. This increase was 2.19 euro/tCO2 higher than at the end of 2020, marking the 10th consecutive weekly increase, according to Carbonexpert.

The EUA price also increased in the second week, until Tuesday, 12.01.2021, exceeding the threshold of 35.6 euro/tCO2, followed by a decreasing trend.

CO2 emissions in the EU ETS fell sharply in 2019, according to the latest assessment by the European Energy Agency (EEA).

In 2019, the number of EUA emission certificates auctioned by EU states decreased by 36% compared to 2018. However, total auction revenues increased by 447 million euro due to higher prices of carbon certificates.
