The transition to hydrogen should be taken step by step, Mihai Aniței, president of the chemical industry producers federation Metachim said, during the ONLINE conference “Project Hydrogen – the Romanian debate”, organized by Energynomics.
“The main European and local objective is decarbonization, with the European goal of producing one million tons of hydrogen by 2030 and 10 million tons by 2050. Production is not complicated, but not all of us are as lucky as Chimcomplex – to produce cheap hydrogen from salt hydrolysis. I tell you, as a representative of the chemical industry as a whole, that we need to take it step by step. The industry has a vision by 2030; first, let us solve the storage problem and make green energy accessible so that we can use it in hydrogen production,” he said.
“Hydrogen is also raw material. We must avoid getting to phrases like “burning the hydrogen for nothing”, as has happened with natural gas. Let us not forget that we also have ammonia, which has the same energy value, equivalent to hydrogen. Ammonia can be produced from hydrolysis or gas and can be stored. All these efforts cannot be done without European legislation on carbon emissions”, added Mihai Aniței.
“We know that today the price of carbon is 40 euros. All the industry, and the chemical industry, in particular, is paying many millions of tons of carbon. Romania is quite behind, and this sudden transition to hydrogen can destroy a large part of the industry if we do not phase it. Targeted funding is needed – both for production and storage, and Transgaz must be part of this circuit”.
