The implementation of sustainable energy plans in Alba Iulia highlighted an integrated approach to the energy segment, said Florin Andronescu, Director of the Local Agency for Energy Alba (ALEA), at the “Smart cities – efficient buildings, green infrastructure, digitalization” conference, organized by Energynomics. Alba Iulia launched in 2020 a new smart city strategy that addresses 11 key areas of development.
“Here we are talking not only about energy efficiency, although it is a priority area, but also about the integration of renewable resources. Energy management needs to make it possible to use energy in optimal conditions in various situations – we encounter the acute need for solutions with a lot of integrated intelligence to be used correctly by the beneficiary,” he said.
At the same time, the concepts of smart city, although they are trendy, contain different approaches and not always very well oriented. “In this respect, if I am talking about energy, in the urban part, we can refer to smart lighting, smart buildings, smart metering and much more. Inserting renewables in an optimal form in urban issues requires smart solutions,” added Florin Andronescu.
With Alba Iulia’s new strategy, ALEA bets on a new approach to smart strategy. In 2016 a strategy was launched for 2018, which aimed to get in touch with as many smart solutions as possible. “Private suppliers have been invited to come to Alba Iulia and implement smart solutions on a small scale, on their own money, thus demonstrating their added value in order to develop the highly successful ones. Smart solutions involve technological solutions that only the modern ones can provide. I’m talking about high-performance computer structures, a high-performance [access to the] internet. The openness of the local authority has incentivized a whole range of smart solutions to appear in the two years,” he said.
The results of that first step led to the creation of the new smart strategy in 2020, which represents a very big step forward for a small town like Alba Iulia, believes Florin Andronescu.
