US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas failed to make any progress in negotiations over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project in talks at Tuesday’s G7 meeting in London, dpa reported.
“We discussed Nord Stream 2 and presented to each other the positions we already know,” Maas said after about 40 minutes of bilateral talks, according to Agerpres.
“It’s nothing new,” he added.
The head of German diplomacy stressed that the gas pipeline dispute represents only a “small part” of bilateral relations.
U.S. officials say Nord Stream 2, which would transport 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia to Germany annually via the Baltic Sea, will make Europe too dependent on Russian gas supplies, while supporters of the project accuse the United States that it is undermining the pipeline to increase its liquefied gas sales in Europe.
Following the installation of Biden in the presidency, the United States has warned that it will take further action against the initiators of Nord Stream 2. The only sanctions imposed by the United States so far target the Russian company KVT-RUS, which operates the Fortuna ship, the sanctions being imposed during Donald Trump’s term.
