Hungary has inaugurated the country’s largest solar power plant, built by China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC) near the city of Kaposvar, Xinhua reports.

The value of the investment amounts to about 100 million euros and the plant would produce 130 million kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity and help Hungary reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by about 120,000 tons annually.

The ceremony was attended by Hungarian Minister for Innovation and Technology Laszlo Palkovics, and CMC President Kang Hubiao was present virtually, according to Agerpres.

Kang explained that the decision to build the 100 megawatt (MW) plant was taken in 2016 and thanked the Budapest Government for its support.

“One of the areas of cooperation between Hungary and China is environmentally friendly investments, such as this 100 MW solar power plant inaugurated on Thursday,” Palkovics said.

He recalled that Hungary, as an EU member state, joined in 2019 the European Green Deal, which stipulates that the economy must be carbon neutral by 2050.
