In January 2022, 10,899 new vehicles were registered in Romania (cars, commercial vehicles and passenger and special vehicles), 42.9% more than in January 2021. Of these, 9,337 were cars, with a 55.5% increase compared to the January 2021 (when 6,004 units were registered). Dacia definitely dominates this segment, with 2,765 cars sold, compared to 976 by the next ranked brand, Hyundai.

On the other hand, used cars, with 24,342 units registered, recorded a 24.8% drop compared to January 2021.

According to the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers – APIA, in 2021, car registrations were slightly lower (-4.1%) compared to 2020. Contrary to the trend, “electrified” cars increased by 109%, reaching a share of market of 15.5%. For the first time in Romania, cars with hybrid propulsion have become the second largest category of new cars, after those with combustion engine powered by gasoline. Last year, sales and registrations of new full-hybrid cars in Romania doubled to 30,706 units, after a year earlier the registered volume amounted to only 14,271 units.

The highest growth on the market was achieved by Plug-in hybrid cars, of 153.9%, but their volume was clearly lower than the classic hybrids, only 2,630 units. Much more numerous were the electric vehicles, which increased by almost 123%, to a total of 6,342 units, ie almost 3,500 units plus compared to 2020.
