Economic analyst Cristian Păun supports the need to reduce excise duties on diesel, according to a position on the social media page.
“Not a week goes by without some cents added to the liter of diesel or petrol. The problem is with diesel where we should urgently do what the Greeks, Italians and others do…: they have a lower excise system for diesel. The price of diesel is much lower than that of gasoline, the price differences are significant,” said Cristian Păun.
“Today, the price of standard diesel in our country is between 6.73 lei/liter and 6.86 lei/liter (cf. Price Monitor within a radius of 5 km, in Bucharest). It is heading towards 7 lei/liter. For premium diesel, the price has been over 7 lei for some time: it is between 7.07 lei/liter and 7.41 lei/liter. It is heading towards 8 lei/liter. Of this price, 60% are taxes that go into the state budget (VAT, excise duties and others),” the analyst added.
“I don’t even want to think about what is on the minds of Romanian farmers with these exponentially rising prices for diesel, with tripled electricity prices and doubled fertilizer prices. If another dry or rainy year hits us, we put agriculture on the stumps for years. If this government really insists on capping food (based on panting agriculture), bankruptcy will come for many. Especially for consumers. A real food crisis. When we were just starting to get our heads up and settle the imports issue,” he concluded.
