ALRO will publish its fifth sustainability report at the end of the month, said Ana-Maria Imbrea, company’s Director of Investor Relations and Corporate Relations. She announced, at the Regional Energy Forum of Central and Eastern Europe – FOREN 2022, the components of the central theme of the sustainability report, aluminum being a decarbonization vector in achieving Romania’s climate goals, according to the requirements of the European Ecological Pact, writes financialintelligence.ro.
She reminded that ALRO reports its sustainability performance through a report aligned with the international GRI (Global Reporting Initiatives) standards since 2017, when such reporting was not mandatory.
“We have about 4,000 employees at the group level, we work with about 3,000 suppliers, we indirectly depend on about 20,000 jobs and we contribute over $61 million annually to local and state budgets,” she said.
“In addition, since the 2000s, we have invested heavily in environmental performance, about $700 million in state-of-the-art energy efficiency projects and equipment. That’s why we are still here and we have managed to stay in the top of the world’s companies in terms of aluminum production.”
Another component of the central theme of the sustainability report is that aluminum, through its unique properties, has the ability to be recycled indefinitely.
“It is an important decarbonization vector for the most sophisticated industries, I mean the aeronautical and automotive industries, for which ALRO is one of the top suppliers.”
On the taxonomy side, as of this year, for the financial year 2021, companies are required to report the percentage of eligible and ineligible activities in the activity they carry out, and from next year this process will become even more complex – these companies will have to report the alignment of eligible activities with the European taxonomy to the six environmental climate targets, said the ALRO representative.
“Currently, these technical alignment criteria are only available for two of the six objectives. We look forward to seeing clarifications from the Commission, but the process will certainly be a very complex and unfortunately burdensome one for companies, as the significant contribution that the company has made through its eligible activities to one or more of these objectives should be emphasized, but companies also must carry out a technical analysis which shows that it does not affect the other objectives to which it does not contribute significantly.”
