After the disaster from Fukushima in 2011, the Japanese Government decided to change the fuel mix and concentrate on hydrogen as a future fuel, and many companies, including Kawasaki started concentrating on technical solutions for hydrogen, said Shahrad Adjili, Head of Sales, Kawasaki Gas Turbines Europe, at the Regional Approach Brussels conference, organized by Energynomics. Kawasaki is the first company to operate a complete CHP application on 100% hydrogen, he says.

”Hydrogen has been declared a future fuel for power generation, and we have the technical solutions which may be presented by all gas turbine manufacturers in the future. Kawasaki is well-known for its motorcycles, and the company in fact started 150 years ago producing ships. Across the years we expanded our business into different sections. Kawasaki Gas Turbine Europe belongs to the Energy Systems and Plants Engineering. We have our HQs very close to Frankfurt, Germany, and we also operate an office in Romania and all across European countries. We have a wide range of products when it comes to gas turbines and gas engines. They are highly efficient and mainly designed for combined heat and power applications,” said Shahrad Adjili.

”Kawasaki started concentrating on technical solutions for hydrogen. Starting from transportation of hydrogen, Kawasaki has produced the first ship, which is already in use. Hydrogen is a very dangerous gas, it has to be cooled at -253 degrees C, in order to transport it. You need a lot of very sophisticated solutions to keep such a ship in operation. It took Kawasaki a couple of years, based on the experience it had with LNG carriers, to produce the first ship. We are also going to increase ships’ size, and by 2030 this 160,000 cubic meters ship is going to be operational,” he added.
