The external partners of the Republic of Moldova transferred, in 2022, 12.7 billion Moldovan lei (MDL) (about 620 million euro) to the state budget to help the country deal with crises, including due to the war started by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, the National Newspaper reports.
The European Union, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are the main external financiers of the state budget of the Republic of Moldova.
Thus, according to data from the Ministry of Finance, in 2022, most external funds came from EU countries and institutions, totaling 5.5 billion lei. More than half of these were given in grant form.
Last year, the Republic of Moldova received two grants totaling 1.7 billion lei from the European Commission. The German government offered a grant of 805.4 million lei, and that of Romania – one of 199.9 million MDL (about 9.8 million euros).
In terms of loans, the French Development Agency contributed 1.5 billion lei to the state budget of the Republic of Moldova, and the European Commission and Poland – with another 692.4 and 387 million lei, respectively, according to Timpul.md
Also, the European Investment Bank (EIB) disbursed 153.4 million lei for the Moldovan Railway.
