The Republic of Moldova is on its way to freedom as energy is concerned and managed to reduce its historical dependence on a single energy source. This have created a sustainable energy landscape for the country.
“I have been talking about road to slavery and road to freedom where the road to freedom is initially quite thorny, a narrow path, but in the energy path you can already see that the path is getting gradually wider and more comfortable”, said Jānis Mažeiks, Head of the EU Delegation in the Republic of Moldova, during the “Regional Approach Chișinău” conference organized by Energynomics.
The country is struggling to ensure its energy security after two difficult years where the high energy prices have been an obstacle to the economic growth. This is the reason for the country needs to strengthen the resilience to ensure the access to strong interconnections and to stable energy sources.
Mažeiks said that Moldova has made a significant stride in advancing its energy security and having better energy suppliers and that has been due to the progress achieved with the help of the EU. “It is clear that investments in renewables and infrastructure and also energy efficiency are vital for an affordable energy supply and a decarbonized industrialization. This would help Moldova in its path to the EU accession because demonstrates the country’s commitment to sustainable practices and aligns with the EU’s environmental energy policies”, he added.
Many changes in the environmentally friendly domain lately by prioritizing local green energy production and adopting energy efficient technologies and these measures are crucial for ensuring a reliable electricity supply.
Moldova is moving to more efficient energy consumption by implementing some specific laws aligned with EU’s legal framework on the matter. Also, EU is supporting Moldova’s model on renewable energy reform which is expected to pave the way for significant investments in this sector and in utility scale battery storage systems as well.
“A trust fund is going to be implemented to assist the refurbishment of the residential buildings focusing on energy efficiency measures with the purpose of reducing the energy consumption. Also, other projects are being implemented in partnership with EBRD and EIB”, according to Mažeiks.
