Energy transition plays a crucial role in OMV Petrom’s strategy, and the company has made major progress in this regard, including by joining forces with various partners in several renewable energy generation projects, said Ionuț Ciubotaru, vice-president of OMV Petrom.
“We’re a bit ahead of where we want to be. We are building on the projects we have developed in partnership with different companies and entities. We are moving forward. We’re trying to move fast, in tune with the industry,” he said, at the conference “2024: A defining year for the renewable energy sector in Romania”.
The company is currently running tenders for 450 MW projects with CE Oltenia and for another 88 MW of renewable generation capacity at Doljchim. “Soon” it could launch another tender for a 700 MW project in Teleorman.
According to Ciubotaru, the energy transition will be carried out through partnerships, and this is due to several reasons, such as the complexity of the projects, the high investment costs and the necessary know-how. “There is an appetite for partnerships, but there are many things that can be improved,” he added.
Many projects are carried out in an unprofessional way, which makes them impossible to carry out. Another problem is that there are very few EPC companies in Romania that can build large projects.
The energy transition is having the effect of migrating large projects from industrialised areas around larger cities to smaller towns. According to Ionuț Ciubotaru, these new areas should be better prepared to receive capital infusions.
