Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) contracts are becoming essential not only for renewable energy projects, but for all types of investments in general. PPAs are financial instruments for risk management and economic policy, which provide long-term stability and predictability, said Lăcrămioara Diaconu-Pințea, Country Manager OX2 Romania.

“PPAs provide a secure and predictable framework for investment, thus facilitating the development of new energy generation capacity. If we want investment in energy, we need PPAs. Period. It is essential to have these contracts and this risk management approach. You can’t just jump in with the “whatever it takes” approach, especially as the market is very volatile. These contracts provide long-term stability and predictability,” she said at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.

To this end, the European Commission last year imposed a package of measures aimed at the wind energy sector in order to reach national green energy targets. Only one thermal power plant has been built in Romania in the last three decades – OMV Petrom’s 860 MW plant at the Brazi refinery. Otherwise, investments have been backed by support schemes and the country faces a lack of energy production capacity.

Forecasts for the wind sector’s workforce are optimistic, with an expected tripling by 2030 to 900,000 workers, if the volume of installed capacity is promoted in line with the targets set by the European Commission, Pințea said.
