The Bucharest-Ilfov Regional Development Agency supports the public administration, private companies, research institutes, universities and civil society with a new Interreg Europe project that addresses the entire cycle of waste management: generation, collection, transport, treatment and processing, disposal. In this sense, ADRBI invites all interested parties to be part of the group of relevant local actors of the CLEAR CITIES project, to contribute to the exchange of good practices in the region, with a view to improving waste management policies and establishing effective waste management models waste, with low greenhouse gas emissions.
This project is complementary to the approaches so far regarding the general problem of waste within the radius of Bucharest municipality and Ilfov county which, according to the report drawn up in 2022 by the Court of Accounts, often encounters difficulties in terms of collection and separate collection infrastructure waste. At the present time, only one landfill operates in the Bucharest-Ilfov region, the one in Vidra commune. At the same time, the project aligns with the EU objective of becoming climate neutral by 2050, through safer, more sustainable and more resilient European cities, preserving the quality of the environment and the health of their citizens.
“CLEAR CITIES differs from the rest of the projects in which we are partners within the Interreg Europe political objective “A greener Europe” because it targets all 5 phases of the waste management cycle. It is a project through which we want to bring all stakeholders concerned with waste management to the same table, to practice learning by pooling information and sharing good practices with external partners from Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Slovenia and Bulgaria . It is a good opportunity for training and transforming knowledge into quantifiable practices and in accordance with the European vision of the environment”, said Daniel Popescu, head of the Program Development and Assistance Department, ADRBI.
In a context marked by the growth of urban demography and the volume of waste generated per inhabitant, it is vital to make greater efforts to reduce the impact of waste on the environment and the population. The balanced consumption of resources aims to promote sustainable economic development in all regions, thus contributing to the fulfillment of the recycling objectives from the circular economy package, in accordance with the National Waste Management Plan, respectively the approved Waste Management Plans for the Municipality of Bucharest and Ilfov County in the year 2021.
