The need for system services increases in proportion to the expansion of wind and photovoltaic capacity

Romania will reach an installed capacity of 15 GW of wind and solar power by 2030 and 35 GW by 2050. As more and more renewable energy units are installed, the need for system services to balance the grid will also increase. These include arbitrage services, imbalance balancing and other system services essential for the economic efficiency of the energy sector, said Raul Toma, Managing Partner at EVOLVE Energy Management Solutions.

“The more renewables we put into the system, the more the need for system services will increase. To have maximum economic efficiency, the battery must be thought of as a unitary whole that provides all three types of services, namely arbitrage, system services and imbalance compensation,” he said at the conference “Battery Energy Storage Systems – BESS Romania”, organised by Energynomics.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are becoming increasingly important, generating varied revenues. The most profitable are system services, generating between 70,000 and 85,000 euros per installed MWh per year. Imbalance compensation brings in around 15,000 euros per installed MWh per year and arbitrage generates between 20,000 and 25,000 eurosper installed MWh per year. Hidroelectrica remains a strong competitor in the area of system services, and the hybridisation of renewable energy parks (RES) may partially reduce the need for such services.

EVOLVE, part of the RomCapital Invest group, is contributing to the development of these solutions, having already installed more than 1.8 GWh of capacity in its own energy storage systems. The RomCapital Invest Group, with a turnover of €62 million in 2023, is active in four main business directions.

The conference “Battery Energy Storage Systems – BESS Romania” was organised by Energynomics with the support of our partners: Alive Capital, Elektra Renewable Support, Enevo Group, Ensys, Enexus, OX2, EVOLVE Energy Management Solutions, EVOLVE Energy Management Solutions, SIM Connect, SolaX Power, Think Blu Solution, WEBUS 4 ENERGY, Wiren.
