Data centres cannot run on wind or solar power alone, but Romania has the potential in the energy production area to support such facilities, said Lucian Enaru, Country Manager at Schneider Electric.
“Schneider is involved in more than 95% of the data centres in Romania, which are small. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a trend that is coming upon us”, explained Enaru, at the conference “Digitalization and Energy Efficiency – Bucharest” organised by Energynomics together with the Italian Chamber of Commerce for Romania – CCIpR.
“Think about the rate of adoption: the internet took seven years to reach 100 million users, while AI took just two months. The number of IoT devices is also growing sixfold. All these digital developments are energy-intensive, and in the coming period, the energy consumption associated with AI alone will increase overall consumption by 4%,” explained Enaru.
He added that the world is now at an impasse between the energy crisis on the one hand and climate challenges on the other.

“We are at a critical point where, if we don’t take action, carbon emissions will continue to rise. Schneider has a plan through digitisation to make energy consumption more efficient,” Enaru added.
