L. Dragnea: Works for the new reactors at Cernavoda to start in 2015
China Nuclear Power Corporation filed on September 23 a binding offer for the realization of reactors 3 and 4 at the Cernavoda plant. In the near future, a government commission is to investigate the offer and begin negotiations, the Romanian Vice Prime Minister Liviu Dragnea said. He highlighted that, following discussions with the Chinese Vice Prime Minister Zhang Gaoli, the construction of the two reactors will probably be begin next year. “In our time frame, by the end of the year the negotiations will be completed and the joint memorandum for this investments will have been signed. Starting from next year, we will probably begin to witness the completion of this project, one with a very high value – 720 MW per unit, ie a total of 1,440 MW, which would bring more than 1.5 billion euro worth orders for the Romanian industry, over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, and significant additional revenues to local budgets and to the state budget”, Dragnea said. In early September, Nuclearelectrica’s management announced that China Nuclear Power Corporation has qualified in the process meant to select the investors for the construction of the new nuclear reactors at Cernavodă. The Chinese company was the only bidder. The Chinese company will be majority shareholder in the project company that will develop a total investment estimated at 6.5 billion euros. General China Nuclear Power Corporation was founded in 1994 and it is the largest Chinese producer of nuclear power, operating 11 nuclear reactors, with an installed capacity of 11,620 MW. In comparison, the total capacity of the Romanian energy production is about 20,000 MW.
