The final form of the national energy strategy will mention several investment projects, among which the 600 MW of Rovinari and the new Cernavoda nuclear reactors, the state secretary in the Ministry of Energy Andrei Maioreanu announced in the Keynote Speech opening 5th edition of the energynomics Awards Gala. The official reaffirmed the basic principles for the development of the Romanian energy sector, including interconnection with neighboring markets, ensuring competition in the energy markets and increasing Romania’s contribution to the regional and European markets by capitalizing on the national primary energy resources.
The national energy strategy drafted in 2016 is undergoing a comprehensive updating and completion process, Maioreanu announced. “The vision of the energy strategy is to grow the energy sector, in terms of sustainability. Developing the energy sector means building new capacities and modernizing the existing ones in energy generation, transport and distribution”, the State Secretary said. “Growth means encouraging internal consumption in terms of energy efficiency, and, last but not least, exports of electricity”, the Ministry of Energy representative said. Andrei Maioreanu explicitly mentioned exports of primary energy resources, when he exposed the seven fundamental objectives of the energy strategy:
- Increasing Romania’s energy contribution to regional and European markets by capitalizing on national primary energy resources
- Romania – a provider of energy security
- Competitive energy markets – the foundations of a competitive economy
- Clean energy, but also energy efficiency
- Modernizing the energy governance system
- Ensuring access to electricity and heat for all consumers
- Protection for vulnerable consumers and reducing energy poverty
The strategy will define the major investment objectives of national interest in the energy sector, such as the 600 MW generation group in Rovinari, the 3 and 4 nuclear reactors in Cernavoda, the pump-storage hydroelectric plant in Tarniţa-Lăpuşteşti or the hydropower complex on the Danube, at Turnu Majorelle – Nicopole.
