I don’t think a halving of the excise tax on fuels is possible, because Romania is already at the minimum threshold agreed by the European Union, according to Daniel Anghel, partner and leader of the Tax and Legal Consulting Department within PwC Romania.
“Yesterday we saw a halving of the excise tax and I can honestly tell you that we should look at European regulations first because we are already at the minimum threshold agreed by the European Union and I don’t think we can cut from a legal perspective below where we are now,” said Daniel Anghel.
The coalition validated, on Tuesday, the temporary reduction, by 50%, of the excise duty on fuels, a measure that would lower the price at the pump immediately by more than 1 leu, announced on Facebook the Minister of Finance, Adrian Câciu, according to Agerpres.
“We have proposed to the coalition leaders a solution to the temporary 50% reduction in fuel excise duty, a measure that would reduce the pump price immediately by more than 1 leu. The proposal was validated in today’s meeting, so in the next period we will have discussions with The European Commission and the big fuel distribution companies in order to reduce fuel prices to a level that is affordable for all consumers, be they individuals or companies. We have come to govern to take measures to protect the Romanian population and companies from the impact of the energy crisis. This is just one of the decisions that will constitute the major package of solutions aimed at reducing energy bills and calming the inflationary momentum manifested at the beginning of this year,” the quoted source added.
The president of the Senate, Florin Cîţu, the leader of PNL, said on Monday, referring to the possibility of reducing the excise duty for fuels, in the conditions in which the price at the pump reached 7 lei, that: “I could take it into account, of course.”
According to the PNL leader, the “key” to reducing prices is for the central bank and the finance ministry to “work together.”
