The coupling of the markets in Romania, Moldova and Ukraine aims to increase electricity flows as well as the development of market monitoring capacities through regional cooperation, and, in the future, the establishment of national capacity markets or a sub-regional capacity market to ensure security of supply, it is stated in a press release from the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE).
The launch of the MUR-EMI initiative for the Integration of the Moldova-Ukraine-Romania Electricity Markets was the main topic of Tuesday’s discussions between the president of ANRE, George-Sergiu Niculescu and a USAID delegation led by the economic attaché of the US Embassy in Bucharest, Jessup Taylor.
“On 25.04.2023, at the headquarters of ANRE, there was a working meeting between the president of ANRE, George-Sergiu Niculescu, the vice-president of ANRE, Mircea Man, and the American USAID delegation, which included Steve Burns, head of Energy and Infrastructure for the Europe and Eurasia Office, and was led by the economic attaché of the US Embassy in Bucharest, Jessup Taylor. The object of the meeting was the proposal to launch the Moldova-Ukraine-Romania Electricity Market Integration initiative (MUR-EMI) with the support of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Association of Utilities Regulatory Commissioners (NARUC),” it is stated in the ANRE press release, according to Agerpres.
According to ANRE, the MUR-EMI initiative will focus on facilitating cooperation between regulatory authorities, transmission system operators, electricity exchanges and other relevant institutions from the three countries, with the ultimate goal of implementing the coupling between Romania, Moldova and Ukraine.
“Through such actions, ANRE will continue to develop joint projects and actions in the region through sustained efforts in order to continue and strengthen the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States,” states the quoted source.
