Tenants of apartment buildings can directly use renewable energy produced by photovoltaic panels mounted on roofs, this being an innovative solution for lower bills, claim representatives of the Association of Prosumers and Energy Communities of Romania (APCE).

In this regard, the association has presented to the Ministry of Energy a legislative proposal to optimize and streamline energy consumption for tenants of apartment buildings.

“The Association of Prosumers and Energy Communities of Romania (APCE) has presented a legislative proposal to the Ministry of Energy to optimize and streamline energy consumption for tenants of apartment buildings. The initiative aims to establish a new type of prosumer – the Condominium Prosumer (PC) – which will allow tenants to directly use renewable energy produced by photovoltaic panels mounted on the roofs of the buildings,” it is mentioned in a press release quoted by Agerpres.

Currently, the energy produced by photovoltaic systems mounted on blocks is used only for common spaces, and the surplus is injected into the grid, without a direct benefit for the tenants, the cited source states.

Thus, through the APCE proposal, homeowners’ associations will be able to continue using this energy for common spaces, and tenants will be able to benefit fractionally from the monthly energy surplus.

“In this way, solar energy is used in a much more efficient way, thus reducing the costs of energy bills for tenants as well,” the statement added.

Homeowners’ associations will be able to install photovoltaic panels on roofs, with the consent of the majority, thus becoming Condominium (PC) prosumers.

“The energy produced will be used as follows: self-consumption coverage for common spaces (lighting, elevator, surveillance cameras, etc.); monthly and proportional distribution of the surplus energy from the photovoltaic system between the owner or tenants, members of the respective Condominium Prosumer, according to a formula (Individual Energy Share Quota – CPIE); reduction of the monthly bill value through direct compensation of active energy by the energy supplier common to all PC members”, the press release also states.

Among the benefits, the association mentions: lower energy bills, resulting in a significant reduction in costs for each apartment, as well as the efficient use of roofs, given that Romania has over 4,200 hectares of roofs available for photovoltaic panels, with a production potential of over 4,000 MW. According to the association, it is not necessary to install smart meters or modify the existing infrastructure.

At the same time, APCE representatives claim that millions of tenants can benefit from green energy. According to the cited source, this represents a simple, easy-to-implement virtual metering solution that will allow all tenants who wish to use the solar energy generated on the roof of their apartment buildings.
