Green cars will reach a 29% share of sales by the end of 2024, while the total new car market will continue to grow, but at a slower pace of just 5.3% compared to 2023 , show the estimates of the Automobile Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA).

“In 2024, the Romanian car market will continue to evolve, anticipating a moderate growth of 5.3%, reflecting an adaptation to the new economic, social and political dynamics. Even at 150,000 new cars that will be sold this year, the Romanian market remains below the level of 2018 and 2019, demonstrating the long-lasting impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the challenges, electrified cars will remain in the spotlight, with an estimated increase of 24.4%, while sales of purely electric cars – even if at a slower pace – will continue to grow, reaching an estimated market share of 12.7%. The Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers and Importers (APIA) continues to be a pillar of reference in providing accurate analysis and insights vision of the automotive industry in Romania”, says Dan Vardie, president of APIA, quoted by Agerpres.

In the segment of light commercial vehicles plus minibuses, a slower growth curve will be recorded this year, respectively of 7.2%, compared to the data from 2023, and for heavy vehicles and buses a jump of 5.1% is forecast .

Thus, “electrified” cars, respectively electric ones (100% electric and plug-in hybrids), as well as classic hybrids (which also have electric propulsion without charging from an external source), will reach in 2024 a market share of 29%. Thus, from this analysis, it is estimated that, during the year, almost three times more “green” cars will be registered in Romania than those with diesel engines.

Within this segment, fully electric cars will have a market share of 12.7%, equivalent to a 24.7% jump in the number of registrations, compared to the previous year.
