All 33 Auchan hypermarkets in Romania will include, starting this week, collection points for used edible oil from customers, to be recycled and used in biofuel production, Auchan informs. The pilot program of Auchan used oil collection was initially in two hypermarkets in Bucharest – Drumul Taberei and Crângaşi, and over the last four months over 150 liters of waste oil were collected, according to the quoted source.
Auchan Romania’s decision to develop this program contributes to the initiative of environmental organizations alerted to the negative effects on the environment: a single liter of food oil thrown into sewage pollutes one million liters of water, representing the amount needed by an adult to survive for 14 years, Auchan claims, according to Agerpres.
The national collection program of Auchan Romania is addressed to all household consumers who, according to a study carried out by the National Agency for Environmental Protection, are the largest generators of used edible oil. According to the same study, 99% of the amount of waste oil reaches the city sewers. This behavior has harmful consequences on the soil and waters that need decades to regenerate, according to Auchan.
