Romania is considering very seriously the attack of Mobility Package 1 at the Court of Justice of the European Union, if it goes into force in its current form, since its implementation would mean a disaster for the Romanian freight transport, the nominated Minister for Transports, Lucian Bode, said on Wednesday, after the hearings of the parliamentary specialized committees.

“I was on 18 (of February) in Brussels. We are nine states that have voted against also in the Council. The vote in committee is following, in Parliament. We will table amendments for all the issues we disagree with, but most serious regulation, if implemented, is the one related to the return of trucks every eight weeks. If at eight weeks the trucks have to return home, in the member state, we are talking about the bankruptcy of this industry, an industry that produces and brings in revenues to the budget of about 5.9 billion euro. We do not imagine that this can happen,” said Bode, quoted by Agerpres.

He offered assurances that the Romanian part would appeal to all the political levers of the European Parliament and an amendment to this legislative package would be tabled.

“We will use all the political levers of the European Parliament, we will submit an amendment to see if it passes. We are nine countries, we are still in minority. If an amendment passes, we must resume the dialogue. If it does not pass, we are considering very seriously to appeal to the Court of Justice of the European Union. It would be a disaster for the freight transport in Romania if this approach were to be completed and should be implemented within 18 months of its adoption,” explained Lucian Bode.

The protectionist measures proposed in the Mobility Package 1 lead to the exclusion of the Romanian transport companies from the European market, which will generate a 50% increase of the current account deficit of Romania, said on February 28, in a statement, the National Union of Road Carriers of Romania (UNTRR), which asked the authorities to contest the agreement regarding this normative package as soon as possible at the European Court of Justice.
