Politicians have the responsibility to take on the energy issue and to identify solutions that will bring a change of mentality among citizens who have become accustomed to energy being cheap and accessible at any time, said Corneliu Bodea, Adrem CEO.
“We are too used to talking about energy as if it should be free and we feel we are its rightful beneficiaries. Industrial consumers say they can no longer produce in Europe because of too much effort, and vulnerable consumers say they can’t bear the costs of this transition,” Bodea said at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.
He explained that high energy prices are unavoidable, given the hundreds of billions of euros of investment that needs to be recouped.
“We will have to bear that cost. We will be paying higher energy distribution tariffs in the long run and we have to accept to make this effort,” he emphasized.
Bodea stressed the need for a more honest discussion about renewable energy, recognizing that the energy transition will be neither simple nor cheap.
“On the one hand, we have the climate change issue and companies that have committed to the energy transition through investments and projects. We are investing now to have a cheaper industry, and companies that leave the EU will regret it, while those who will invest in decarbonization will be the main winners in ten years’ time,” Bodea explained.
He added that by 2030, the EU will need to invest 67 billion euros a year in distribution networks, whereas it currently allocates less than half that amount.
