The President of the Competition Council, Bogdan Chirițoiu, was elected to the position of Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulatory Authorities (ACER).
The mandate is for a period of two years and starts in January.
“My colleagues from the Board of Directors trusted me and chose me as vice-president, taking into account the experience I gained as president of the competition authority in Romania, in monitoring and investigating the energy market, areas in which ACER intensifies involvement. The Agency has an important and growing role in the proper functioning of the European energy market, in a context marked, on the one hand, by the energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine and, on the other hand, by the profound transformations brought about by renewable energy production technologies,” Bogdan Chirițoiu, president of the Competition Council, told Agerpres.
At the beginning of December 2023, the mandate of the president of the Competition Council, Bogdan Chirițoiu, in the Board of Directors of ACER was renewed for another four years, his candidacy being proposed by Romania and supported by eight other member states. He then emphasized that in the next period the agency must focus on the implementation of the European Union’s protection regulation against the manipulation of the wholesale energy market, with a focus on supporting national agencies in investigative activity and facilitating cross-border transactions.
“We will continue to make efforts for the proper functioning and integration of the internal electricity market, because it generates good prices, secures the energy supply and helps to achieve the green transition. We must also remain ready for new tasks related to the consolidation of the European market of energy. I remind you that ACER recently received the task of calculating the gas price above which the intervention mechanism of the European Union is triggered. I am sure that other tasks will follow that will become priorities, and in parallel with these I also mention a personal priority and namely the development of relations with the regulatory authorities from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine since the period of the accession negotiations to the European Union. Since Romania has the recent experience of joining the EU bloc, I believe that, together with other colleagues, we can advise the candidate countries in this process,” said Chirițoiu.
The Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulatory Authorities (ACER) is a European institution that contributes to guaranteeing the smooth functioning of the single European gas and electricity market. The agency supports the national regulatory authorities in fulfilling the regulatory function at the European level and, if necessary, coordinates their activity.
