Romania must not make the mistakes of the first wave of renewables, from 2009, but for this it is necessary that neither the industry be “too greedy” nor the authorities offer too attractive support schemes, said Bogdan Chirițoiu, the president of the Council Competition, at the 9th edition of the Energy Strategy Summit, an event organized by Energynomics.
“The wave of investment in renewables now resembles that of 2009. There will be several years of investment until the financial instruments now available will be exhausted. We have to make sure we do things right. The schemes must be attractive, but not so generous that at some point they no longer have political support and we have to make corrections that affect investors. We all have to learn. The industry should not be too greedy and ask too much, and the state, when it promises, should be serious and keep its promise. This is the lesson from the first wave of renewables,” said Chirițoiu.
At the European level, recent years have shown that dependence on potentially hostile energy suppliers is dangerous, and the EU should find a balance in its relations with external partners. One solution to this addiction is the energy transition.
At the national level, Romania will have to find solutions to supply energy to industrial consumers in order to limit the excessive volatility in the market. Another lesson that could be learned from the first wave of renewables is that Romania needs to produce locally some of the components of future renewable energy installations, especially since there are considerable amounts available.
“In the first wave, nothing was produced in Romania apart from foundations and towers. If something remains in our industry from the money that will be given, it will be an addition to what we achieved in the first wave. This time we can do things better”, added Chirițoiu.
