The spot price of gas traded in Romania and in Europe increased today by tens of percent, amid the war in Ukraine and its consequences, according to e-nergia.ro.

At the Central European Gas Hub (CEGH), the hub of Vienna to which we refer, the gas delivered the next day was traded at a price of 170 euros/ MWh, given that yesterday the price was 118 euros. So a 44% price increase. Also, on the spot market of the Romanian Commodity Exchange (BRM), today, 793 lei were paid for 1 MWh of gas, from 518 lei/ MWh the previous day. So, on the spot market in Bucharest (it’s true, with not much of liquidity), prices increased by 53% in just one day.

Prices have also risen sharply in futures markets. Thus, at CEGH, the gas delivered next month was traded at 162 euros / MWh, which means an increase of over 31% in just one day – yesterday’s quotation for the same product was only 123 euros. At RCE, there were no gas transactions on the futures markets today, until the time of writing this news.

Prices are rising, although Russian gas supplies to Europe through pipelines have not been and are not yet affected by the war, but fears of possible new sanctions that would affect physical supplies are pushing the market up.
