Budapest City Hall has announced a social aid for the payment of energy in the amount of 48,000 forints (117 euro) annually, intended for families with children, people with disabilities or chronic diseases and pensioners, informs MTI.

The mayor of the Hungarian capital, Gergely Karacsony, communicated in a video message on Facebook that Budapest citizens with incomes below the subsistence limit will be eligible for the full aid, and pensioners with pensions below the “real average” can receive up to 24,000 forints annually, according to Agerpres.

Karacsony said the aid fulfills his election promise to expand the “social assistance model” in the 14th district of Budapest, where he was mayor, and will be granted from October 1.

“Social grants would generally be a task for the government, but now it has other business, looking for adversaries instead of solutions. That’s why it’s time for us to step in,” he said.
