Only 2,400 consumers were left without electricity following Sunday’s blizzard, and although consumption increased above average, there are no adequacy problems in the system, Minister Sebastian Burduja said on Sunday.

“I have summoned the energy command to analyze the situation in real time and develop intervention plans.

“At this moment, we are not facing significant problems in the distribution networks. At the national level, there are around 2,400 consumers without power, following damage caused by fallen trees on overhead power lines. The incidents are in the counties of Botoșani, Suceava, Neamț, Dolj and Ialomița. Over 100 teams of distribution operators are in the field repairing the damage, so that in 2-3 hours we estimate that all consumers will be supplied with electricity again”, Burduja wrote on Facebook, Sunday afternoon.

“We received information from the ANM that the weather will be particularly cold for this period of the year, both day and night. Maximum temperatures will generally be between 2 and 10 degrees, and during the nights and mornings there will be predominantly negative temperatures. Thus, we expect a higher daily consumption of natural gas, around 34-35 million Nm3 (cubic meters measured under normal conditions – ed.). With a stock in warehouses of 829 million Nm3 and a domestic production of 24-25 million Nm3, there is no situation in any scenario in which we would face problems in ensuring the gas supply. These days we will extract 3.8-4 million Nm3 from the Ghercești and Sărmășel deposits. Moreover, we are already implementing the program to refill the deposits for next winter. Today we stored 4 million Nm3 in the Urziceni and Bălăceanca deposits.

“In terms of electricity consumption, we will record evening peaks (8, 9 pm) above the normal period, around 8000MW. There are no adequacy problems at the level of the national energy system. These days, we are running production at Portile de Fier at maximum, coal stocks at CE Oltenia are increasing, and the degree of filling of the lakes is also increasing, already exceeding 60%”, he added.

“Fortunately, we are not experiencing or anticipating any significant problems at this time, and this is thanks to experts from the Romanian energy sector, from electricity and gas transmission and distribution operators, producers and even the national energy dispatcher.”
