Romania will have more than 200 MWh installed in electricity storage units by the end of this year, but connection requests are approaching 25,000 MW, said Costel Constantin, director of the NES Planning and Operation Department of the National Energy Dispatching Centre.

“There are individual projects as well as mixed projects, along with photovoltaic and wind units. The technical requirements for storage installations are clearly defined in the legislation, and from the checks we have made so far, we have not noticed any technical deviations”, Constantin said at the conference “Battery Energy Storage Systems – BESS Romania”, organised by Energynomics.

Also, in 2030, with the phase-out of coal, Romania will need 4,000 MW of batteries that can provide four to five hours of power, equivalent to 20 GWh.

“We believe that storage is the solution to maintain flexibility in the operation of the national electric power system (NES), to ensure operational reliability in the context of the energy transition and we believe that it provides better predictability for investments in electricity generation, contributing to lower price volatility,” Constantin added.
