The value of carbon certificates listed on futures contracts on the ICE stock exchange reached 54.85 euros on Wednesday, for contracts with delivery in December 2023, according to the data consulted by Energynomics.
“The price of the CO2 certificate on the ICE ECX exchange in London opened this morning, 23.06.2021, the EUA trading sessions at 53.75 euro/tCO2. The EUA certificate went up over 53 euros, constantly gaining for the third day in a row, as energy prices rose and investors did not withdraw, although the results of CO2 auctions were weaker,” according to Carbonexpert.
Thus, on Wednesday, a second peak of the last three months was registered, on May 14 ICE displaying a maximum periodic value of 56.65 euro.
At the same time, discussions are currently under way at European Commission level to extend the EU ETS to the transport and construction sectors.
The European Commission intends to create a “social climate action fund” with revenues from a large carbon market if it decides to include emissions from transport and buildings in the EU ETS, according to DG Climate leader Frans Timmermans.
