China’s Leapmotor Group will start producing small electric cars at the Stellantis plant in Tychy, Poland, as part of a joint venture between the two automakers, sources told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Production of Leapmotor’s TO3 model will begin in the second quarter of 2024, using the SKD (semi-disassembled kits that are included in the vehicles) technique, the sources claim.
The two automakers did not respond to requests for comment.
In 2023, Stellantis NV announced that it is acquiring a 21% stake in Leapmotor for $1.6 billion in a reset of its China strategy to focus on electric vehicles (EVs) after years of weak sales on the largest car market in the world, according to Agerpres.
Also, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer announced the formation of a joint venture with Stellantis, which will have exclusive rights outside of China for export, sales and production from the Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology plant. In addition, Stellantis, which owns brands such as Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep and Peugeot, gets access to components and certain technologies of the Chinese electric car maker.
The press had previously announced that Stellantis was considering the Mirafiori complex in Turin, Italy, as a base for Leapmotor’s European production.
Stellantis, the world’s fourth largest car manufacturer, was established in 2021, following the merger between the French group PSA and the Italian-American Fiat Chrysler, and regroups brands such as Fiat, PSA, Chrysler, Jeep, Citroen and Alfa Romeo under the same umbrella.
