The Competition Council constantly monitors the prices of basic products and checks whether some merchants have raised prices illegitimately, said the president of the competition authority, Bogdan Chirițoiu.

“Currently, we are processing the data received from traders to check if these price increases are justified. We are constantly monitoring the prices of basic products, both food and non-food. As I said before, we have noticed the so-called ‘waterbed effect’ , i.e. a reduction in the prices of products with a capped commercial addition and an increase in the prices of other products. As a result, we are checking whether some merchants have somehow taken advantage of this situation and raised prices illegitimately,” explained Bogdan Chirițoiu, according to Agerpres.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced on Tuesday that the competition authority will conduct an investigation into the 25% increase in the price of detergents.

“The price of detergents has increased by 25%. The Competition Council will conduct an investigation. I have already spoken with the president,” said Marcel Ciolacu, in Brasov.

Postal services, detergents and medicines are among the top price increases recorded in April 2024, compared to the same month of the previous year, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics.

In April 2024, the price of postal services rose by 26.25%, compared to April 2023, that of detergents by 25.64%, and that of medicines by 23.86%.
