All customers are now asking themselves what is the percentage of green energy currently consumed and how it can be increased, said Ciprian Pop, Area Sales Manager ABB Romania, during the conference “Digitalization and Energy Efficiency – Sibiu”, organized by Energynomics.
“There is a concern in this direction. Not many are interested in exporting energy to the grid, but only to go below the load curve, and a percentage [of the consumed energy] to be green energy. There is also interest towards the energy storage area, as well as, more and more often, I notice people are interested in the places where electric charging stations can be installed”, he said.
“People are clearly concerned about the carbon footprint, energy consumption, and what is happening these days with the change in energy prices, which impacts the price of the finished product, encourages such concerns. All this cannot take place without the digitalization of the electrical infrastructure. ABB’s response to process digitization is ABB Ability. It is a software developed by ABB for energy management”, he said.
Once an evaluation and a first audit have been carried out, the production areas to be optimized will be identified. Thus, the areas that must use the platform will be identified. “We are talking about an audit in which we investigate what the processes are, the electrical infrastructure of the factory, the monitoring points. After the optimization area and the identification of the improvement options, the software part intervenes – comparisons, adjustments, forecasts, various optimizations”, he said, offering some examples and case studies.

Once implemented, the software provides an online analysis of energy consumption. Sensors transmit in the Cloud many types of information, based on which the software can make optimization decisions and preventive maintenance in real-time. “The software reads the number of operations that a switch performs and can provide real information on the number of operations for which it was manufactured and whether it has reached the end of its life,” he exemplified.
Digitalization of any existing panel, ABB or non-ABB, allows the connection of sensors in any section, especially the propulsion ones. “We can later see an x-ray of the factory, a planning of real needs.” ABB Ability also provides energy and asset monitoring and management.
