Romania’s net coal production in the first seven months of the current year totaled 2.667 million tons of oil equivalent, up by 14,4% (336.000 tep) higher than in the similar period of 2016, according to centralized data by the National Institute for Statistics (NIS). In the mentioned period, Romania imported 249.900 teg of net coal, with 26.900 tep (9,7%) less than the quantity imported during the same period last year, according to Agerpres.
According to the Energy Strategy project, published on the ministry’s website, Romania has total reserves of 12,6 billion tons of lignite, geographically concentrated in the Oltenia Mining Basin. The deposits currently in operation total 986 million tons. The coal reserves, concentrated in the carboniferous basin of the Jiu Valley, amount to 2,2 billion tons, out of which 592 million tons are in the exploited perimeter.
