The Norwegian company Pixii AS announces the implementation of PowerShaper XL, a concrete example of efficient integration of energy storage technologies realised in partnership with Stadtwerke Hünfeld. The project demonstrates how innovative solutions can optimise consumption, stabilise the electricity grid and create new economic opportunities.
Modular energy storage solutions provider Pixii AS has implemented PowerShaper XL in a strategic collaboration with Stadtwerke Hünfeld, the local utility company of the German city of Hünfeld. The project includes two independent installations, each playing a key role in optimising energy consumption and improving the sustainability of the local energy system.
The first installation, located at the wastewater treatment plant, is a 540 kW, 1.39 MWh storage system. Integrated with a 1 MWp photovoltaic park, it optimises self-consumption and reduces operational costs. With a constant demand of 300 kW, the excess solar energy produced is stored and utilised at a later date, thus ensuring a stable and efficient flow of electricity, regardless of variations in solar output.
The second component of the project is a large-capacity (6.41 MW and 21.62 MWh) grid-scale storage system. It consists of 12 fully equipped PowerBase XL units connected to three transformers, and provides essential services for balancing the electricity grid. Through Frequency Frequency Regulation (FCR), Automatic Frequency Regulation (aFRR) and participation in energy markets, the system transforms batteries from a simple energy reservoir into a valuable economic asset. Stadtwerke Hünfeld is thus demonstrating how a local grid operator can exploit the potential of energy markets to achieve both financial benefits and energy stability.
PowerShaper XL is a modular energy storage system designed to help companies and grid operators reduce costs and generate revenue by integrating into energy service markets. With power up to 60 kW and a storage capacity of 200 kWh per unit, the system adapts to the diverse needs of users, enabling management of solar energy consumption, peak shaving and participation in grid balancing services.
One of the main advantages of the PowerShaper XL is its flexibility, as it can operate both stand-alone and integrated with advanced energy management systems, offering fast deployment thanks to the delivery with batteries already installed. In addition, it contributes to energy sustainability, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing the overall efficiency of power systems.
The co-operation between Pixii and Stadtwerke Hünfeld can be a model for network operators and utility companies. Through the intelligent use of batteries for balancing in the energy market and optimising self-consumption, the project shows how energy storage is not only a technological solution, but also a viable economic model for the future.
