Electric chargers lead to new investments in the power grid, said Constantin Ichimoaei, Executive Manager ABB, during the „Smart Cities – What we can do today” conference, organized by Energynomics.

ABB, a company with a history of over 130 years, is a leader in technology and has a turnover of over 29 billion euros globally. “Sustainability for us means that we care about future generations. We want a healthy society, we care about our children and we support progress. To date, we have over 30,000 fast chargers sold and installed worldwide. We have over 600,000 AC charging stations installed around the globe. We started in 2010 and since then we have been the market leader in charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. We are present in 88 countries and we started the discussion about installations in Romania in 2014. The future of mobility is electric”, he said.

Now the chargers are connected, they have data and communication services, payment systems, we are talking about complex hardware and software. They communicate in the cloud and with the back office. “If three years ago we were only talking about charging times, now we are talking about an installed power, and the chargers are meeting the energy sector,” he added.

“In the last year, we have started to have more and more discussions about car fleets, electric bus fleets. The discussion has shifted, therefore, from a simple charger to a charging network – from a user to a community”.

The ABB Ability platform makes this possible by managing assets, energy and fleets.

“Electric chargers lead to new investments in the grid, in transformers – medium to low voltage substations, new cables, etc. And all this investment is seen in the final cost. The business model is changing, and the biggest pressure is on medium-voltage installations, transformers and low voltage installations … We need investments, including for storage in batteries”, Constantin Ichimoaei added.

The conference “Smart Cities – what we can do today” was organized by Energynomics, with the support of our partners ABB, Automobile Bavaria Group, Consolight, Eaton Electric, Enel X, Flash Lighting Services, LAPP Romania, Phoenix Contact, REI Group, Sixt, Signify.
